Forty-four former members of the New People’s Army (NPA) availed of P1.32 million in financial assistance from the Negros Occidental provincial government in an effort to help them rejoin the mainstream society.
Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson led the awarding of P30,000 to each beneficiary, in a ceremony held recently at the Provincial Capitol Social Hall in Bacolod City.
Of the 44 former rebels, 24 surrendered to the Philippine Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion (79IB).
These initiatives are part of the government’s commitment in supporting former rebels as they reintegrate into society and transition to a peaceful and productive life, 1Lt. Dan Carlo Samoza, 79IB civil-military operations chief, said.
In a statement, Lacson reiterated the provincial government’s dedication to peacebuilding efforts, ensuring that development programs will continue to support individuals and communities affected by conflict.
Brig. Gen. Ted Dumosmog, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to peace and development, assuring the former rebels of the military’s full support as they transition to civilian life.
He urged them to help in persuading their former comrades to surrender and join the path for peace.
The activity was also witnessed by Provincial Planning and Development Office officer-in-charge Anna Marie Lucasan and Lt. Col. Arnel Calaoagan, 79IB commander. | GB
