The 33rd Provincial Environment Month celebration, on the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution”, kicked off June 9 at the Capitol in Bacolod City, with Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson calling for a “systematic change and a rethinking of how people produce, consume, and manage plastics”.
“Plastic pollution is not merely a matter of poor waste disposal, it is a crisis that affects biodiversity, public health, food systems, and even our climate,” Lacson said in his message.
He emphasized that ending plastic pollution requires more than just good intentions, it demands the courage to shift from convenience to responsibility.

He also called for strengthened collaboration among local government units, educational institutions, civic groups, and private sector partners to implement stricter environmental policies, promote sustainable alternatives, and incentivize innovative solutions.
“Most importantly, let us cultivate a culture where every Negrense understands that protecting the environment is not someone else’s job – it is our shared duty,” Lacson stressed.
The kickoff started with a thanksgiving mass, followed by a short program and the first-ever KapitAlam Environmental Quiz Bowl Brgy. Kapitolyo edition.
Provincial Administrator, Atty. Rayfrando Diaz, also expressed his full support for the province’s environmental protection advocacy and its impactful initiatives aimed at preserving the environment, the Capitol said.
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office head Joan Nathaniel Gerangaya also joined the opening program, along with representatives from partner-agencies and Capitol employees.
The activity was spearheaded by the Provincial Environment Management Office, led by Atty. Julie Ann Bedrio, who called for continued support for Environment Month activities in collaboration with the LGUs of Negros Occidental.
In addition to tree planting, mangrove growing, and cleanup drives, more activities are scheduled in cities and towns in Negros Occidental as part of the localized Environment Month celebration. ||
