2 rebels killed, firearms recovered

Two suspected New People’s Army rebels died while firearms were recovered during an encounter with Army soldiers and police troopers on Thurday (Dec. 24) at Sitio Libjo, Barangay  Napacao, Siaton, Negros Oriental.

Maj. Cenon Pancito, 3rd Infantry Division spokesperson, said that the encounter occurred around 7:25 p.m. after soldiers of the 11th Infantry Battalion and troopers of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 7 received reports that armed were in the area.

Pancito said that the firefight led to the death of two unidentified men, believed to NPA members, and the recovery of  M653 assault rifle, a caliber 45 pistol, a bandoleer with two magazines of M14 rifle, three back packs containing assorted medicines and personal belongings, and subversive documents.

Lt. Col. l Ramir Redosendo, 11IB commanding officer, lauded the residents of Barangay Napacao for reporting the presence of the armed men in their community.

Both the government and CPP-NPA have suspended the yuletide season ceasefire, which they traditionally observed in the past several years.

Earlier, local rebel group spokesperson Ka JB Regalado issued a statement ordering all units of the Leonardo Panaligan Command in central Negros to launch widespread tactical offensives in response to what he claims as military abuses against civilians.– GB
