March is Women’s Month, a time to recognize the dignity, strength, and contribution of women in society and in the church.
While many cultures in the ancient world limited the role of women, Jesus treated women with dignity, compassion, and respect. His ministry elevated women in ways that were radical for His time.
As we reflect this month, we remember that Christ not only cared for women, He included them as faithful disciples and entrusted them with sacred responsibility.
In first century Jewish and Greco Roman society, women often had limited public voice and status.
Formal discipleship was typically reserved for men. Yet the Gospels show that women followed Jesus, supported His ministry, learned from His teaching, and remained faithful even when many others fled.
Luke records that women traveled with Jesus and helped support the ministry from their own resources. This was not cultural convenience, it was kingdom transformation.
First, recognize that Jesus welcomed women as disciples.
Luke (8:1-3) names several women who accompanied Jesus, including Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna. They were not casual observers. They were followers, learners, and supporters of the mission.
Jesus allowed women to sit at His feet, as Mary of Bethany did, a posture of a true disciple. In doing so, He affirmed their capacity to learn, serve, and lead within the kingdom of God.
As followers of Christ, we are called to honor, encourage, and support the gifts and calling of women in the church.
The example of Jesus challenges any attitude that diminishes or sidelines women. In Christ, dignity and discipleship are extended to all.
Second, celebrate that Jesus entrusted women with the resurrection message.
After the resurrection, Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene (John 20:16–18). In a culture where women’s testimony was often dismissed, Jesus entrusted her with the greatest announcement in history, that He had risen.
She became the first witness of the resurrection and was sent to tell the disciples. This was not accidental. It revealed that in God’s kingdom, faithfulness matters more than status.
Women continue to play vital roles in proclaiming the gospel, teaching truth, and strengthening the church. Let us value and affirm their voices. May we learn from Mary Magdalene’s devotion and courage to testify about the risen Christ.
Women’s Month reminds us that the gospel brings restoration and honor. Jesus broke barriers, affirmed dignity, and entrusted women with meaningful roles in His redemptive work.
May we reflect His heart in how we treat, value, and empower women today, remembering that in Christ, all are called to faithful discipleship. | NWI
