A whale shark was found dead in a fish pen in Pulupandan, Negros Occidental, and towed to shore, the Philippine Coast Guard sub-station in the town said.
It added that at around 7:10 p.m. Sept. 25, Barangay Zone 1A resident Ludy Yanson informed the sub-station of the dead whale shark towed to shore.
PCG personnel verified the report and learned that fisherman Nelson Lim and four other crew members discovered the dead whale shark inside their fish pen, that is around one kilometer from the shoreline.
Based on the examination conducted by the municipal agriculturist and representatives from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the whale shark weighed around two tons, and measured 7.37 meters in length and a width of 1.42 meters.
The PCG coordinated with the Municipal Agriculturist of Pulupandan and the BFAR Region 6 for the proper turnover and disposal of the marine animal.|
