The San Carlos City Heritage Culture and Arts Council (SCCHCAC) held the Traditional Crafts and Artisans Fair May 9 at the City Hall grounds, in celebration of National Heritage Month.

The event showcased handcrafted products and how they are made by local artisans, including the Cabagtasan Tribal Council Weavers, Panoolan Pottery Community, and San Carlos City BogArt Wood Carving group.

Traditional products made and displayed include rattan baskets, mats, hats, purses, vases, pots, jars, various wood carvings, and others.

SCCHCAC office in-charge, Engr. Magnolia Antonio, said the event aimed at celebrating and recognizing the history, culture, and identity of specific cultural groups, which also aligns with Republic Act 10066, which mandates the preservation and conservation of heritage sites and cultural properties.

She added that through a resolution by the Sangguniang Panlungsod, a list and inventory of natural and cultural properties was created, but some properties were not included because they are privately owned.

She also explained that under the law, a site or object can only be officially recognized as a national heritage or cultural property if it holds significant cultural value.

She also invited everyone to the culminating activity on May 30 at the City Auditorium.

Local artisans Leonisa Impil and Rebecca Sortigosa, meanwhile, thanked the local government for initiating the event, which allows them to share and showcase their culture and livelihood, especially to the younger generation.

City Hall employees witnessed the event while an online coverage was also streamed via the official Facebook pages of Turismo San Carlos and Rene Gustilo. | SCC PIO photos
