Mayor Greg Gasataya cancelled anew the face-to-face classes today, Oct. 14, but only in primary and secondary public schools in Bacolod.

He said a rapid damage assessment and needs analysis was being jointly conducted by the City Engineer’s Office and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, hence the continued class suspension.

This is upon the recommendation of the Department of Education-Division of Bacolod, brought about by the earthquake felt in the city and neighboring areas early morning yesterday, Oct. 13.

“Public schools are encouraged to shift to modular distance learning, performance tasks and projects to ensure that learning competencies are met,” Gasataya said in an advisory.

He added that classes in public tertiary level and private schools are left to the discretion of the respective school heads and safety officers.

Gasataya earlier suspended the face-to-face classes in all levels, both public and private schools in Bacolod, yesterday, following the magnitude 6.0 earthquake (later downgraded to 5.8 in Bogo City, Cebu at 1:06 a.m. Oct. 13, that was also felt in the city and province of Negros Occidental, among others.

The Phivolcs said the quake, felt at Intensity III in City of Canlaon, Negros Oriental, and City of Himamaylan in Negros Occidental, was an aftershock of the Sept. 30 Mw6.9 offshore Northern Cebu earthquake. | CGC
