The SM Foundation Inc. (SMFI) has significantly impacted the agricultural sector in the Philippines, particularly through its Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) Sustainable Agriculture Program, and for over 17 years, this initiative has supported more than 30,000 farmers nationwide.

In Bacolod City and Negros Occidental province, 1,270 beneficiaries benefitted from the free training in both basic and advanced organic farming techniques, aiming to improve farmers’ livelihoods, ensure food security, and boost the economy.

The KSK program in Bacolod began in 2007, with four sites in this highly-urbanized city, and in the towns of Murcia, Toboso, Don Salvador Benedicto, as well as in the cities of Talisay, Silay, Victorias, and Kabankalan.

The program not only focuses on farming methods but also encourages participants to become agripreneurs by providing entrepreneurial training, the SMFI said in a press release Aug. 29.

Farmer-graduates, like Rodrigo Sumugat, have benefitted immensely, learning not just updated farming techniques but also skills in bookkeeping and financial management, it added.

This holistic approach has helped farmers like Sumugat to improve their produce’s quality and quantity, and expand their market reach through cooperatives and direct sales opportunities, such as Weekend Markets at SM malls and partnerships with local businesses.

The SM Food Group, which includes the SM Supermarket, Savemore, and SM Hypermarket, touches base with KSK alumni for opportunities to supply its stores.

Beneficiaries are given opportunities to sell their produce at SM malls rent-free, like at this Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan pop-up market booth at SM City Bacolod.

The SM Foundation, through the KSK program, continues to foster a sense of community and belonging among the farmers, with events like the Harvest Festival and graduation ceremonies symbolizing their success after the 14-week program and integration into the broader SM family.

This initiative highlights SM Foundation’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and community development across the Philippines, the press release added. ||
