The Philippine Tourism Awards, organized by the Department of Tourism, is the country’s highest and most prestigious recognition program honoring destinations, organizations, and individuals that exemplify excellence and innovation in the tourism industry, the Sipalay City Tourism Office (SCTO) posted.

“Emerging as the grand winner, Sipalay stood out among notable destinations, underscoring its leadership in sustainable and innovative tourism development,” the SCTO stressed, adding that Baguio City and Biñan City in Laguna were also recognized for their tourism initiatives.

This milestone reflects the unwavering commitment of the city government of Sipalay, under the leadership of Mayor Lizares and Vice Mayor Oscar Montilla Jr., to champion sustainable, inclusive, and resilient tourism development.

“By promoting responsible travel, protecting the environment, and fostering community participation, Sipalay proves that tourism excellence is achieved when growth goes hand in hand with sustainability,” the SCTO said. “As Sipalay proves, no matter how small or less known a destination may be, it can rise to national and global recognitions with dedication, vision, and community-driven actions.”

For Mambukal Resort, the commendation is more than just an award. “It is a testament to nearly a century of history, culture, and service to both Negrenses and visitors from around the world.”

The Ishiwata Bathhouse, designed in the 1920s by Japanese engineer Paul Kokichi Ishiwata, stands as a living reminder of how culture, architecture, and nature intertwine, the Mambukal Resort & Wildlife Sanctuary stressed in a statement.

What began as a humble bathhouse built around the healing sulfur springs of Mt. Kanlaon grew into a retreat for sugar planters and locals, a barracks during World War II, and later, a recognized historical landmark under the National Historical Institute in 2006. “Today, it remains at the heart of Mambukal Resort & Wildlife Sanctuary, a beloved haven for relaxation, healing, and eco-tourism in Negros Occidental.”

This award is not only for the bathhouse itself but also for the generations of Negrenses, caretakers, workers, and leaders, who have preserved its beauty and significance. “It highlights the enduring role of Mambukal Resort as the province’s oldest and most cherished tourist destination—one that continues to thrive as a symbol of Negros’ natural abundance and cultural heritage.”

It also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Mambukal’s legacy while embracing the future of sustainable and inclusive tourism. “The Pillar Award belongs not only to Mambukal Resort but to the entire province of Negros Occidental, whose story it proudly carries.” ||
