Sipalay farmers get indemnity checks, livelihood assistance

Seventy-three Sipalaynon farmers received indemnity checks amounting to P448,628 from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. (PCIC) Feb. 2.

The distribution, facilitated by the City Agriculture Office, was held at the Conference Hall of the New Government Center in Sipalay.

“The PCIC’s initiative is a testament to its dedication to help farmers overcome challenges and hardships,” the city said, adding the indemnity checks serve as financial safety net, providing much-needed assistance to the farmers who have suffered losses due to unforeseen circumstances.

The Department of Agriculture in Western Visayas, meanwhile, recently turned over a cattle multiplier farm project to the Sipalay local government unit, through the City Veterinary Office, at the Livestock Breeding Center in Sitio Canlayuhan, Brgy. Gil Montilla.

This initiative is part of the Typhoon Odette Rehabilitation Program—Cattle Multiplier Farm Project, which aims to improve the production of cow’s milk, and develop the dairy industry in the city, that could contribute to the economic growth and provide more opportunities for local farmers.

Mayor Maria Gina Lizares, together with punong barangay Sergio Libre and the Brgy. Council of Manlucahoc, also turned over a solar dryer, community center, and a stage to residents of Sitio Barasbarasan in the barangay.

More than eighty households attended the event that was organized by the community development personnel in the sitio. The City Nutrition Office, with their mobile kitchen, also prepared meals for the attendees.

Lizares said the varied programs to address malnutrition have been fruitful, adding the city is no longer in the list of LGUs in the province with high rate of malnutrition. She said the mobile kitchen will visit the barangays to provide healthy meals and educate the community on the importance of nutritious foods, especially to children. ||
