Senator Francis Tolentino will lead the signing of a memorandum of agreement May 6 on the staging of the Philippine ROTC Games (PRG) Visayas regional qualifying leg that will be hosted by Bacolod City from May 26 to June 1.
Tolentino, the brains behind the holding of the PRG, will be joined by Mayor Alfredo Benitez at the MOA signing this morning at the Bacolod Government Center, along with other members of the Philippines Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Games Executive Organizing Committee.
Tolentino, a brigadier general in the Philippine Amy (Reserve), wants to further promote nationalism and sports in the ROTC program, and proposes to revitalize the ROTC through the holding of the 2024 PRG, the MOA states.
It added that the PRG aims to provide an opportunity for ROTC cadets to participate and compete in the sporting events, and to encourage the development of the sports program, promote physical education, foster self-discipline, teamwork, and excellence, train young athletes for international competitions, and develop the grassroots sports program for youth.
“The parties advocate sports as a springboard toward values formation and total human development to promote equality and diversity necessary to become reservists,” the MOA said, adding the 2024 Philippine ROTC Games aims to instill in the tertiary ROTC students the importance of physical activity, sports, and wellness.
The city earlier said that some 1,000 student-athletes would participate in the Visayas leg, with the Mindanao qualifier set in Zamboanga City on June 23-29, the Luzon leg in Indang, Cavite on July 28 to Aug. 3, and the national championships, also in Indang, Cavite from Aug. 18-24.
The inaugural PRG championships was also staged in Cavite in September last year. | CGC
