The Department of Public Works and Highways said yesterday that it has completed a one-kilometer flood control structure in Barangay San Jose, Manjuyod, Negros Oriental.
The river control structure, costing P71.54-million, was funded under the 2023 General Appropriations Act, and now serves as a crucial infra in the long-term economic stability of Manjuyod, the DPWH said, adding it enhances the community’s resilience to flooding and safeguarding local livelihoods.
DPWH Negros Island Region OIC director Denise Maria Ayag stressed the significance of the project in addressing the recurring damage caused by storm surges.
“Before the construction of the riverbank protection structure, this area in the municipality of Manjuyod, which consists of both residential and agricultural areas, frequently experienced severe flooding due to the overflowing of the Manjuyod River,” Ayag explained.
The project benefits Barangay San Jose residents by shielding extensive sugarcane, corn, and other rootcrop plantations, preserving vegetation, and providing added protection to the livelihood of local farmers.
Implemented by the Negros Oriental 1st District Engineering Office, the flood control structure now enhances the municipality’s resilience against future flooding, reducing the need for costly emergency repairs and recovery efforts after a natural disaster, Ayag added. ||
