One of the fleeing New People’s Army (NPA) remnants encountered by Philippine Army soldiers in Barangay Buenavista, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental on June 6, has surrendered to the authorities.

Lt. Col. Ziegfred Tayaban, 94th Infantry Battalion (IB) commander, said yesterday that the 30-year-old self-confessed rebel surrendered as he could no longer endure the sufferings within their group.

He wanted to rejoin his family, he added.

The June 6 encounter claimed the life of a remnant of the dismantled NPA Central Negros 2 front and led to the recovery of M16 assault rifle with ammunition and personal belongings. | GB
