Bacolod City is taking proactive and innovative measures to address the perennial flooding problem, with the adoption of pump and flood gate systems.
The pump gate system will be positioned at major rivers in the city, including Mandalagan, Magsungay, and Lupit, the city said Nov. 29, adding that these gates can “effectively rehabilitate drainage systems, control water levels, and prevent cases of flooding.”
Bacolod is the first local government unit in the country to adopt this innovative flood management solution, that could especially prevent the inundation of vulnerable areas.
Mayor Alfredo Benitez earlier recognized the need for an immediate response to the flooding problem as the global warming continues, which increases the city’s vulnerability to floods that affect numerous communities.
To further strengthen the flood control initiative, the city will also establish the DRRMO Unified Command Center and will deploy mobile command centers to ensure a coordinated and immediate disaster response. ||
