The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported two ash eruptions, which lasted four to eight minutes, at the crater of Mt. Kanlaon in Negros Island on Saturday.

At the same time, Phivolcs also recorded three volcanic quakes in the past 24 hours as the volcano released 7,594 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux on Nov. 23.

Mt. Kanlaon, which is under Alert Level 2 (increased unrest), also emitted a moderate 50-meter tall plume, which drifted southwest, as degassing continues.

Phivolcs earlier warned people against prolonged exposure to sulfur dioxide as the fumes can cause irritation of the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract.

In a statement, La Castellana Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office called on the residents to remain vigilant, and refrain from entering the four-kilometer permanent danger zone. | GB
