The Provincial Environment Management Office (PEMO) has recognized 13 local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental for their compliance with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, or Republic Act 9003.
The recognition was announced during the pre-awarding ceremony of the annual Provincial Search for the Best LGU Compliant with RA 9003-Year IV held during the Third Quarter Provincial Solid Waste Management Board meeting on Sept. 25 at the Food Terminal Market of Negros Occidental in Bacolod City.
Six municipalities and seven cities were recognized based on their implementation of solid waste management programs and compliance with national environmental requirements.
In the municipality category, Murcia was named champion, followed by Calatrava as first runner-up and Hinigaran as second runner-up.
Manapla placed third runner-up, La Castellana, fourth runner-up, and Moises Padilla, fifth runner-up.
In the city category, San Carlos City emerged as champion, with Sagay City as first runner-up and Bago City as second runner-up.
Sipalay City placed third runner-up, followed by Talisay City in fourth runner-up, Silay City in fifth, and Kabankalan City in sixth runner-up.
The evaluation panel included representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau Negros Island Region, the Provincial Management and Development Office-Urban Unit, and the Kapitolyo Solid Waste Management Educators.
The pre-awarding activity forms part of PEMO’s upcoming EcoLuminaries: Abanse Negrense Environmental Awards and Incentive Program, the province’s platform for recognizing environmental achievements. ||
