“A Life of Fashion and Fashion for Life”, an exhibition celebrating the artistry, legacy, and impact of Maria Beatriz “Patis” Pamintuan Tesoro – an icon from the region and a national treasure in Philippine fashion – will open tonight, Nov. 15, at The Negros Museum in Bacolod City.
A fashion show, showcasing the collection of the Grand Dame of Filipiniana, along with those of Negrense designers Leonardo Tano-Geraldes, Rodolp Steve Genzola, Edwin Benitez, John John Ditching, Kelly Cuachon, Lourdes Lipa, Chino Ledesma-Christopherson, and Tony De Ramos, will follow on Saturday, Nov. 16, the organizers – the Negros Cultural Foundation and The Negros Museum, said.
“Patis Tesoro is an artist par excellence. Over her 50 years in the fields of fashion, cultural revival and conservation, fabric design, product development, and various other endeavors, Patis has elevated her craft to the highest degree,” the organizers said.
As a founding member of the Patrones de Casa Manila, she developed the Casa Manila in Intramuros, showcasing late 19th-century Filipino culture. This inspiration crystallized her calling as a designer, bringing Filipiniana back to prominence. She established the Katutubong Filipino Foundation (KFF), aiming to revive traditional Philippine handicrafts and arts while supporting tribal communities and artisans. Her efforts have been instrumental in the recovery and revival of pineapple fiber and Philippine natural dyes, integrating their use into fashion, homeware, architecture, and more, they added.
“As we celebrate our 28th year of preserving and promoting the rich arts and culture of Negros Occidental, we reflect on the progress we have made and the cultural heritage we continue to nurture. We are delighted to present a major project, in partnership with the province of Negros Occidental, the ‘Fashion for Life, Life of Fashion’ retrospective exhibition, to honor the life and artistry of Patis Tesoro,” Lyn Gamboa, president of the Negros Museum, said in her letter to Mayor Alfredo Benitez.
Gamboa sought permission from the city for the temporary full road closure of South Capitol Road, in between Gatuslao Street and Lacson Street, and Cottage Road, to be designated as parking areas on Nov. 15 and 16, both from 4-10 p.m.
She said that more than 200 respected and honored Bacolodnons, Negrosanons, and guests from the community of fashion, culture, arts, and heritage were invited to witness this once in a lifetime event, thus the request for road closure.
This arrangement will ensure convenient access and a seamless experience for all attendees, Gamboa added.
