Damage to crops and livestocks following the downpour brought by Typhoon Quinta that flooded several towns and cities in Negros Occidental early this week reached more than P36 million, the Office of the Provincial Agriculture and the Provincial Veterinarian’s Office reported.
Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino said that based on initial reports, damage to ricefields and other crops was assessed at almost P35 million.
Hardest hit LGUs included the cities of Sipalay, Cadiz and Bago, as well as the municipalities of Hinoba-an, Moises Padilla and Isabela.
Masculino, however, said he expects that the figures may increase as other local government units affected by floods have yet to submit their reports.
Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena also reported more than P1 million in damages to livestocks in Hinobaan, Moises Padilla, Isabela, Binalbagan, Valladolid, San Enrique, Bago City and La Carlota City.
Majority of the animals, including cows, carabaos, gamefowls, pigs and goats, died from drowning.
The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council of Western Visayas also reported that 2,222 residents were affected by floods in Negros Occidental. GPB
