The Department of Public Works and Highways said Aug. 9 that it has completed two slope protection projects, all worth P179 million, along the Binalbagan River in Negros Occidental, aimed at ensuring the safety of residents and their properties.
Undertaken by the DPWH Negros Occidental 2nd District Engineering Office (DEO), the projects include the P79.1-million structure downstream of the Binalbagan River right bank, adjacent to Binalbagan Bridge, and the P99-million river control along the Binalbagan-Isabela Road.
These projects aim to mitigate the risk of soil collapse and flooding in the area, the DPWH said.
The P79-million project involved the construction of a 195.2 lineal meter concrete slope protection with steel sheet piles foundation using U-type sheets, and the construction of a concrete pile cap, reinforced with horizontal ties, against the erosive forces of the river.
The second project features reinforced concrete slope protection with steel sheet piles, ensuring stability and durability, and designed to significantly reduce risks associated with heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
“These slope protection structures are vital for safeguarding lives, homes, and properties in Binalbagan,” DPWH6 director, Sanny Boy Oropel, said in a statement, adding that by preventing riverbank erosion and stabilizing the infrastructure, “we are enhancing the resilience of our communities against natural calamities.”
“Slope protection projects are a testament to our commitment to improving the quality of life for our constituents. By reinforcing the riverbanks and road slopes, we are proactively addressing the challenges posed by natural elements, and ensuring a safer environment for all,” Oropel added. ||
