Negros Occidental has recorded 4,093 dengue cases from Jan. 1 to Aug. 16 this year, marking an increase of 918 cases from only 3,175 cases during the same period in 2024, data of the Provincial Health Office showed.
Dengue-related deaths also increased to nine.
Each of the 31 component cities and municipalities in Negros Occidental has at least one case, with Bago City remaining on the top of the list, recording 965 cases.
As of Aug.2, highly-urbanized Bacolod City has logged 671 dengue cases, including four deaths, the City Health Office reported.
Age group with the most number of cases is 11 to 20 years old.
Dengue is an infection caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
The infection triggers a severe flu-like illness often followed by a severe drop in an infected person’s platelet count.
Among other symptoms are severe headache, pain behind the eyes, full-body aches, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands or rashes. | GB
