A series of coordinated bike actions in several countries and cities, including in Bacolod City, was held June 4 to “highlight the gravity of the climate crisis and the urgency of undertaking bold, ambitious, just, and equitable climate solutions”.
The bike action in the city started at the Bacolod Government Center and ended at the Capitol Lagoon. It was participated in by the Asian Peoples Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD), together with the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ), and local organizations Konsyumer Negros, BMP-Sanlakas Negros, and the Bike Groups in Negros.
The event also aligned with the World Environment Day and the start of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) inter-sessional meetings to be held in Bonn, Germany from June 5 to 15.
The APMDD seeks to highlight the need for real and just climate actions based on equity and fair shares, reject harmful technologies and false solutions, advocate against carbon offsets and market-based solutions, and emphasize the importance of a rapid, just, and equitable transition to 100 percent renewable energy, the Konsyumer Negros said in a press release.
“We need real solutions to the climate crisis. Rich countries have to do their fair share of global climate action. This means delivering on their fair share towards reaching zero global emissions and fulfilling their obligations to provide climate finance,” Lidy Nacpil, coordinator of APMDD, said.
Konsyumer Negros coordinator Miggy Yulo added: “Commuters inhale carbon emissions on a daily basis and they bear the brunt of the climate crisis. We need concrete actions against the climate crisis and most importantly commuter-friendly cities that actually cater to commuters more than cars. We need road decongestion and not road widening. We need bike roads and not only bike lanes”. ||
