Local chapters of youth and cause-oriented groups in Negros urged the public to maintain strict vigilance and demand accountability as the Senate started the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte July 6.

The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) Negros said they will maintain a watchful eye for the entire duration of the trial.

The group claimed that Duterte has “consistently avoided explaining her office’s financial spending in past congressional hearings through strategic political maneuvers.”

“It is in the best interest of the broad masses of people that the impeachment of Sara Duterte must be pursued, based on allegations of corruption, unexplained wealth, and betrayal of public trust,” Bayan Negros spokesperson Noli Rosales said.

Florence Guzon, vice president for Visayas of the Kabataan Partylist, condemned the utilization of secret funds, asserting that public money must strictly fund vital services rather than state-led intimidation.

He pointed out that while millions were allegedly pocketed for supposed school intelligence operations under fictitious names, the actual outcomes only resulted in the “baseless red-tagging” of progressive students and educators.

“Let’s continue to make noise until Sara is convicted, and Marcos and all the bureaucrat-capitalists are held accountable for what they stole from the people,” Guzon said. | TMD
