Around P207 million in crops and infrastructure damage was logged in Negros Oriental in the aftermath of Typhoon Tino that pummeled the province two weeks ago, based on partial reports submitted by various agencies to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
These include damage to livestock at P7,729,500, covering the local government units of Canlaon City, Guihulngan City, Mabinay, and Sibulan; damage to rice production – P82,822,919.76, covering 1,808 hectares of land in Canlaon City and affecting 1,794 rice farmers there;
Damage to high-value crops in terms of cost of production – P89,453,745.67; and damage to infrastructure in northern Negros Oriental – P27,085,900, for roads, bridges, and school buildings.

The typhoon also destroyed 498 houses in Canlaon City and five in Vallehermoso; and damaged 1,793 houses in Canlaon. Five schools in Guihulngan City were also damaged, the Philippine Information Agency said in a report Nov. 17, adding that 4,979 families, composed of 20,035 individuals, preemptively evacuated, while 4, 795 families, or 18,907 individuals, were affected in a post-typhoon evacuation.
Canlaon reported 22 fatalities, 42 injured, and three missing due to Tino, there was one fatality logged in Vallehermoso, while three persons were injured in Guihulngan City and two in Bindoy.
Members of the Negros Oriental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council convened Nov. 17 to discuss the impacts of Tino, and decided to gather and validate additional reports of post-Tino response efforts from the ground.
It also approved the release of P2 million as additional aid for affected residents of Canlaon, to be taken from the province’s Quick Response Fund.
PDRRMO head Adrian Sedillo said the residents are in need of water, clothing, and toiletries, adding the provincial government also provided necessary support to Canlaon following the onslaught of Tino.
These include the deployment of heavy equipment for clearing operations, augmentation of personnel for search and retrieval, deployment of water tankers to provide water supply to affected residents, and provision of relief aid. ||
