The National Police Commission (Napolcom) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) recognized the ultimate sacrifice made by the PMaster Sgt. Fernando Marfa, who died after he rescued two companions swept away by strong current during a seaborne patrol in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental on Aug. 7.
In a statement on Aug. 9, Napolcom said it will assist Marfa’s family in processing and securing the benefits due to his beneficiaries while extending whatever assistance it can provide within its mandate.
It also emphasized that behind every police officer who assumes the responsibility to serve and protect is a family that shares in the risks and sacrifices of the profession.
“PMSg Marfa’s family has paid a heavy price for his years of service and we honor them as we honor his memory,” Napolcom said.
The PNP likewise mourned Marfa’s death, describing his final act as one of courage and selflessness in the line of duty.
Marfa, who was assigned to the Cadiz Component City Police Station, was conducting a seaborne patrol with members of the Bantay Dagat in the waters of Sitio Bisang, Barangay Luna, when two of them were swept away by strong river current.
Without hesitation, Marfa went to their aid but was overpowered by the current and submerged. He was declared dead on arrival at the Cadiz District Hospital.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said Marfa’s actions reflected the highest traditions of the police service.
“PMSg Marfa made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. His courage and willingness to risk his own life to save others reflect the finest traditions of the Philippine National Police,” Nartatez said.
The PNP chief also highlighted Marfa’s decision to put the safety of his companions ahead of his own.
“Sa halip na unahin ang sariling kaligtasan, pinili niyang iligtas ang kanyang kasamahan. Hindi malilimutan ang kanyang tapang at sakripisyo,” Nartatez said. | GPB
