The two ash emission events at Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island on Jan. 7 lasted for eight hours, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

This brought to five the number of ash emission events recorded by Phivolcs since Jan. 3.

The first ash emission event on Wednesday lasted for one hour and 48 minutes, followed by a similar event, which also lasted for six hours and 21 minutes.

Phivolcs also logged four volcanic quakes, with plume as high as 900 meters, having a voluminous emission that drifted towards northwest direction.

Mari-Andylene Quintia, resident volcanologist of Phivolcs Kanlaon Volcano Observatory in La Carlota City, said it signifies that the volcano is still on a restive period and more ash emission events are expected.

Alert Level 2 remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano while entry to the four-kilometer permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited.

In 2025, Phivolcs recorded 30 ash emission events at Kanlaon Volcano.

Quintia said ash emissions are a precursor to explosive eruption.

Despite the eight-hour ash emissions recorded at Kanlaon Volcano, no ash fall was recorded by the local government units around the volcano. | GB
