The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded the occurrence of 14 ash emission events and 67 volcanic quakes, including 18 volcanic tremors, at Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island within 24 hours from March 23 to 24.
The series of ash emissions lasted from two minutes to about seven hours, according to Phivolcs.
From March 20 to 22, Phivolcs logged 15 ash emission events.
Ma. Antonia Bornas, chief of the Phivolcs Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division, earlier explained the ash emission indicates that the magma within the volcano has been able to degas, which reduces the pressure that could trigger an explosion.
Kanlaon had moderately explosive eruptions on Feb. 19 and 26, and on March 15.
Phivolcs continued to advise the public to be cautious of ashfall caused by the ash emission of Kanlaon Volcano.
Alert Level 2 remains in effect over the volcano, indicating “increased unrest”. | GB
