As we celebrate International Women’s Month, we reflect on the lives of women who played a significant role in God’s kingdom.
One such woman is Mary Magdalene. Often misunderstood, her story is a testament to the power of Jesus to transform lives, the faithfulness of women in discipleship, and their crucial role in proclaiming the Gospel.
First, Jesus transformed Mary Magdalene’s life.
Luke 8:1-2: “After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with Him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out.”
In biblical times, demon possession was often associated with severe physical or mental distress. For Mary Magdalene, being freed from seven demons was a complete transformation of her life. Instead of being bound by suffering, she became a devoted disciple of Jesus.
The power of Jesus to heal and restore Mary shows His compassion and ability to redeem broken lives. Mary’s story reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace. Once healed, she did not return to her old life but followed Jesus and supported His ministry.
Second, Mary Magdalene remained faithful even at the cross.
John 19:25: “Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.”
When Jesus was arrested, many of His male disciples fled in fear. However, Mary Magdalene and other women stayed near the cross, witnessing His suffering and death. This act of courage shows her deep devotion and faithfulness.
In times of trial and persecution, true disciples remain steadfast. Mary’s presence at the crucifixion exemplifies unwavering faith. Even when things seemed hopeless, she did not abandon Jesus.
Let us stay faithful to Jesus even in difficult times. Let us also support those who are suffering, just as Mary stood by Jesus. True discipleship means staying with Jesus, even in the darkest moments.
Third, Mary Magdalene was the first witness of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
John 20:16-18: “Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’ She turned toward Him and cried out in Aramaic, ‘Rabboni!’ (which means Teacher). Jesus said, ‘Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: ‘I have seen the Lord!’ And she told them that He had said these things to her.”
In Jewish society, women’s testimonies were often dismissed as unreliable.
Yet, Jesus chose Mary Magdalene to be the first person to see Him after His resurrection and entrusted her with the message to tell the disciples. This moment affirms the role of women in proclaiming the Gospel.
Mary’s encounter with the risen Jesus is one of the most powerful moments in the Gospels. Her response – running to tell the disciples – shows her boldness and obedience.
Despite cultural limitations, she became the first evangelist of the resurrection.
Let us be bold in sharing the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ. Let us also recognize that God uses everyone, regardless of gender, to proclaim His message. | NWI
