Central Philippine University will hold its College Commencement Exercises on Sunday, June 29. A total of 2,230 students will earn their degrees in 43 academic programs, excluding those in Graduate School, Law and Medicine which will have separate graduation rites.
This moment marks the end of one journey and the beginning of another.
For our graduates, this is not just about receiving a diploma; it is about stepping into the calling God has placed upon your life.
As we celebrate this milestone, let us reflect on how God calls us to walk forward with purpose, with courage, and with unwavering faith.
Graduation ceremonies, often called commencements, come from the Latin word ‘commencentia’, meaning “a beginning.” While they may appear to mark an end, they signify the start of a new chapter.
In the Bible, many individuals had their own “commencements” or moments when they stepped into their divine purpose. Let us draw lessons from such moments.
First, acknowledge God’s hand in your journey.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
CPU graduates, your education, experiences, and achievements are not accidents. They are all part of God’s orchestration. Remember the sleepless nights, the hard exams, and even the moments of doubt.
In all these, God was working. Now as you face new responsibilities, challenges, or career paths, continue to recognize God’s hand.
Do not fall into the trap of pride or self-sufficiency. Success without God is empty. Instead, make it a daily practice to pray, to consult Scripture, and to remain humble. Walk with God, and He will walk with you.
Second, embrace the purpose God has given you.
Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord… plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah wrote these words to the Israelites who were exiled in Babylon. They felt abandoned and uncertain. Yet God spoke through Jeremiah to reassure them that their future was secure in His hands.
Graduates, you may be wondering what comes next. Will I get a job? Will I pass the board exam? Will I make my parents proud? Will I make a difference? God is not vague about your future. He has a plan. And He calls you to fulfill a purpose far beyond mere success. He calls you to live for His glory.
Whatever field you are entering, make it as your mission field. CPU’s motto is “Scientia et Fides” or Science and Faith. Let your knowledge be grounded in faith, and let your faith be shown in your work.
Purpose gives meaning to achievement and transforms a job into a mission.
Third, commit to live a life of excellence and integrity.
Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
Paul wrote this letter to the Colossians while imprisoned in Rome. Even in confinement, he reminded believers that their work should honor God.
As CPU graduates, you carry with you the legacy of exemplary Christian education. Our core values of “Faith, Character, Justice, Stewardship, and Excellence” should define your every step beyond this campus. Employers may hire based on competence, but it is character that will sustain you. Let the CPU seal on your diploma be more than a symbol; let it be a testimony of excellence and integrity. | NWI
