Life is precious

Life is truly a gift. Just this week, we have seen in the news many accidents, sicknesses, and even murders. These remind us that life is short, fragile, and uncertain.

Let us reflect on how precious our lives are, and how we should live them in accordance with God’s will.

First, value life as God’s creation.

Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

In the ancient Near East, kings would put their image on statues across their territory to mark their rule. When Genesis says we are made in the image of God, it means every person is like a living statue pointing to God’s kingship.

Unlike Greek thought that separated body and spirit, the Hebrews saw the whole person as God’s creation.

We live in a time when human life is often cheapened through violence, corruption, poverty, or neglect.

God however, declares our lives sacred because we bear His image. This means no life is worthless, no life is disposable, and every person reflects God’s glory.

Second, entrust your life to God.

Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Psalm 90, attributed to Moses, was written as Israel wandered in the wilderness for 40 years.

Many perished before reaching the Promised Land. This Psalm reminds us that life is short, but it can be lived wisely when entrusted to God.

Life is not ours to waste; it is entrusted to us.

Time, opportunities, and resources are all limited. That is why Moses prayed that God would teach His people to number their days.

Life becomes precious when we live with accountability to God, making each moment count.

Third, offer your life as a witness for Jesus.

Philippians 1:21 says, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

Paul wrote this letter while in prison in Rome, facing possible execution under Emperor Nero. Yet he declared that living or dying, his life was valuable only if it pointed to Christ.

This was a radical witness in a society where life was cheap under Roman oppression.

Our lives are not just meant to be preserved but to be offered.

Paul’s words remind us that life is most precious when it is lived for Christ and used to testify about His love. Even death becomes meaningful because it ushers us into God’s presence.

Life finds its highest worth not in length or comfort, but in being lived fully for Christ. | NWI
