Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said on Thursday the provincial government is willing to train the Lupong Tagapamayapa of the barangays to help decongest courts of cases.

The Lupong Tagapamayapa, a system created by the government to solve disputes within the barangay level before going into court, is chaired by the barangay captain with 10 to 20 members.

It is better that conflicts are resolved at their level to prevent further disagreements and so that it will not reach the courts, Lacson said.

He noted that while it is the responsibility of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to train newly-elected barangay officials, the governor said the province wants to focus on the Lupong Tagapamayapa.

As part of its support to the barangays, the provincial government is also providing death insurance to barangay tanods. | GB
