Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said he hopes the next administration will revive the Negros Island Region (NIR), that was abolished by President Rodrigo Duterte in 2017.

“We hope the next administration will consider reviving the Negros Island Region, this time supported by law, so that it would be allocated with budget,” Lacson said.

He added that his stand in supporting the NIR has never changed.

Vice President Leni Robredo, Negrense senatorial aspirant Alex Lacson, and former Vice Governor Dino Yulo, who is running for congressman of the 5th district of Negros Occidental, are among those who are favorably endorsing the NIR revival.

“Without a doubt, majority if not all Negrenses would like to have the NIR. My stand on this never changed,” Lacson said.

Before it was abolished, the full implementation of the NIR was delayed due to budgetary constraints.

The NIR was created through an executive order issued by then president Benigno Aquino III in 2015. — GB
