The municipal government of La Castellana in Negros Occidental is eyeing an eight-hectare lot for the relocation site of homeless families displaced by Typhoon Tino.

Vice Mayor Alme Rhummyla Nicor-Mangilimutan said on Thursday they are purchasing 8.3 hectares of property in Barangay Robles to accommodate more than 300 families.

These are the families whose houses were destroyed by Typhoon Tino, particularly those residing along the riverbanks, which were already declared by the national government as no-build zones.

Mangilimutan said the property owner issued a letter of intent to sell the property to the municipal government while the Municipal Council passed a resolution to engage in a negotiation with the lot owner.

A 60-square meter lot will be allocated for each family.

Mangilimutan said the municipal government will extend financial assistance to those who have already found a relocation area on their own.

La Castellana received a financial assistance of P10 million from the Office of the President to help the families whose houses were either damaged or destroyed by Typhoon Tino.

Mangilimutan said they need more than P10 million to purchase the relocation site. | GB
