At least 2,074 families in Negros Occidental, including Bacolod City, have been displaced by floods and strong winds brought by Tropical Cyclone Kristine as of late Thursday afternoon (Oct. 24).
These include those affected in 15 local government units of the province and in 10 barangays in Bacolod City.
Data of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council showed 1,906 families, composed of 6,797 individuals, have sought shelter in evacuation centers or stayed in houses of relatives and family members.
The affected families are from 80 barangays in the cities of Bago, Cadiz, Escalante, La Carlota, Silay, Sagay and Sipalay as well as the municipalities of Binalbagan, Cauayan, Hinigaran and Hinoba-an, Ilog, Isabela, Pontevedra and Valladolid.
In Bacolod, some 168 families, comprising 584 individuals, from 10 barangays were also evacuated and stayed mostly in schools and barangay halls while others were sheltered in other locations.
According to the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the city government continues to distribute food and non-food supplies to residents still staying in evacuation centers on Thursday.
Although the storm signal has already been lifted in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental Thursday morning, latest rainfall advisory showed “light to moderate with at times heavy rains” are still affecting all cities and municipalities in the province.
“The public and the disaster risk reduction and management councils concerned are advised to monitor the weather condition,” an advisory of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said. ||
