The grassfire on the eastern upper slopes of Kanlaon Volcano has been declared out by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) at about 9 a.m. Wednesday (April 9).
The fire broke out following the volcano’s minor explosive eruption on Tuesday.
According to Phivolcs, the blaze was sparked by superheated ballistic fragments from the volcano’s eruption.
Heavy rains on Tuesday night may have helped in putting out the fire, according to the authorities.
The extent of damage has yet to be established as nobody is allowed to enter the extended six-kilometer permanent danger zone.
Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano, which has erupted three times, since June last year. | GB
