March 8 is International Women’s Day and March is International Women’s Month.

Throughout His ministry, Jesus demonstrated profound care and respect for women. One of the most compelling examples is His encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well.

In the first-century Jewish context, women were often marginalized and held lower social positions. Samaritans were also despised by Jews due to historical conflicts and religious differences.

For a Jewish man to speak publicly with a Samaritan woman was socially unacceptable. Jesus deliberately chose to engage with this woman, challenging cultural norms and demonstrating the inclusivity of God’s kingdom.

First, break barriers, like what Jesus did.

John 4:9 – “The Samaritan woman said to Him, ‘You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can You ask me for a drink?’”

Jesus broke both cultural and gender barriers by speaking to the Samaritan woman. He did not let societal prejudice prevent Him from extending grace and truth. This act reminds us that the gospel is for everyone.

Just as Jesus crossed boundaries to engage with the Samaritan woman, we are called to break down barriers of discrimination and embrace all people with love and speak out against gender discrimination and injustice. Help create spaces where women are heard, valued, and respected.

Second, offer Jesus, the Living Water.

John 4:13-14 – “Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’”

The Samaritan woman sought physical water but encountered the source of eternal life. The offer of Jesus transcends physical needs and meets the deepest spiritual longings.

Women, like men, are offered the same invitation to eternal life, which affirms their spiritual worth and equality in Christ.

Share the message of eternal life with all people, regardless of background. Encourage women to find their worth and identity in Christ.

Third, empower women to share their testimony.

John 4:39 – “Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Him because of the woman’s testimony, ‘He told me everything I ever did.’”

In the first-century world, women’s testimonies were often dismissed as unreliable. Yet, the Samaritan woman’s words led many to believe in Jesus. Her transformation from an outcast to a witness highlights the power of personal testimony and Jesus’ empowerment of women to share the gospel.

Jesus not only valued the Samaritan woman but also entrusted her with sharing the good news. Her boldness in testifying about Jesus brought many to faith. This shows us that Jesus empowers women to be vital witnesses in the mission of the church.

Encourage women to share their faith stories boldly. Support and affirm the role of women in ministry and service.
