A member of the clergy in Dauin town and three frontliners are among the 20 new COVID-19 cases in Negros Oriental.

Dr. Liland Estacion, acting provincial health officer and head of the province’s IATF, made the disclosure but said she cannot give details as to the congregation of the religious leader.

She, however, gave the assurance that he is now at the town’s isolation facility.

A nurse from a private hospital in Dumaguete City and two others from a government health institution were also tested positive after exposure to a COVID patient.

Summary of new cases are 8 in Dumaguete City, 4 each in Dauin and Tanjay cities, 2 in Sibulan and one each from Siaton and San Jose towns.

Estacion also noted a spike on the number of positive cases, particularly in Dumaguete, after the holidays due to some groups who cannot avoid holding gatherings during Christmas and New Year.

Estacion reminds public to be more cautious as the new variant of COVID -19 is already in the country.

Negros Oriental now has a total of 1,206 positive cases from 23,473 swab samples tested.

There are 945 recoveries and 34 COVID deaths in the province. – MML
