Tomorrow, June 18, is a special nonworking holiday in Bacolod City, to celebrate the 87th Charter Day anniversary.

The holiday is per Republic Act 11146, approved on Nov. 9, 2018 by then president Rodrigo Duterte, declaring June 18 every year as special nonworking day in commemoration of the day President Manuel Quezon signed and approved into effect Commonwealth Act 326, which creates the City of Bacolod.

Highlight of this year’s celebration is the Ang Banwahanon Award (ABA) ceremony, which honors outstanding groups and citizens, “whose civic services have made considerable impact to Bacolodnons and the community, and have also immensely contributed to the economic, cultural, sports, social, moral, or educational development of the city”.

The ABA, established under City Ordinance 494 dated May 13, 2009, is the highest award conferred by the City of Bacolod to a civilian member of the community, whose service achievements serve as an inspiration and/or a model worthy of emulation.

Several barangays, meanwhile, will compete in the barangay festival dance competition tonight, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Bacolod Government Center grounds, the city said, adding this is also part of the Charter Day celebration.

These include barangays Sum-ag, Estefania, Villamonte, Alangilan, Alijis, Vista Alegre, Granada, Singcang Airport, Punta Taytay, Banago, and 35. | CGC
