Heavy rains affect 430 families in 7 LGUs in Negros Occidental

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) urged Negrenses especially those living in areas prone to flood and landslide and near waterways to remain vigilant as the southwest monsoon continues to trigger heavy rains.

As of Aug. 29, the Negros Occidental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and   Management Council reported that almost 2,000 individuals or 430 families were affected by monsoon rains in six barangays of Ilog and Cauayan as well as in cities of Kabankalan and Sipalay, where two houses were damaged.

The Provincial Veterinary Office also reported losses in poultry and livestock in cities of Bago and La Carlota, and Pontevedra valued at P10,000.

Landslides were reported in Barangay Manlocahoc, Sipalay City and Barangay Oringao, Kabankalan City while overflowing of creeks and floodwaters had been monitored in Barangay Salong and Barangay Binicuil in Kabankalan City.

Soil erosion was reported at the tailings pond of Maricalum Mining Company in Barangay San Jose, Sipalay City.

OCD-Negros Island Region Director Donato Sermeno III appealed to local government units (LGUs) to put up signages in flood-prone areas and zones prone to landslides to warn residents and commuters of the dangers. | GB
