Growing in wisdom

As we begin another academic year at Central Philippine University, we are reminded of our vision: EXCEL – Exemplary Christian Education for Life.

This vision goes beyond academic excellence; it points us toward a life shaped by faith, wisdom, and service. We are not just here to gain knowledge. We are here to be transformed, so we can also help transform others.

In the Bible, learning is not limited to the classroom. It is a lifelong journey of growing in understanding, discernment, and grace.

Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Let us explore what it means to learn, not just with the mind, but with the heart, spirit, and purpose of Christ.

First, cultivate a teachable spirit.

Proverbs 9:9 says, “Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.”

A teachable spirit means being open to correction, new ideas, and even uncomfortable truths.

In a time when pride and self-sufficiency dominate, God invites us to approach learning with humility and eagerness. True learning begins when we realize we do not know everything.

Jesus, as a young boy in the temple (Luke 2:46), was listening and asking questions. He showed us the value of learning.

Do not fear mistakes because they are tools for growth. A teachable heart listens more than it speaks.

Second, learn to serve, not just to succeed.

Mark 10:45 says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus spoke these words in response to James and John, who wanted positions of power. In the Roman world, education was often a means to power and control, but Jesus redefined greatness as humble service. He showed that the highest form of leadership is servant leadership.

Many pursue learning for the sake of career, money, or prestige. But Christ calls us to use our learning to uplift others. We are not merely scholars. We are disciples called to love, teach, heal, and lead.

Look for ways to apply what you are learning in real-life service. The best learners are those who use their gifts to bless others. | NWI
