A former village chief in Calatrava, Negros Occidental was shot dead in the neighboring Barangay Patun-an on Tuesday (March 18).

The 64-year-old victim from Barangay Macasilao was on her way to San Carlos City when the unidentified assailant followed her inside a passenger vehicle and shot her without any provocation, initial police investigation showed.

A certain “Jay”, 19, who was seated beside the victim, was injured by a stray bullet.

PMaj. Wilfredo Benoman, chief of Calatrava Municipal Police Station, said the gunman fled with his accomplice.

The former barangay captain, whose identity is being withheld by the police, was declared dead on arrival at the Calatrava Municipal Hospital.

Investigators recovered from the scene of the incident two bullet shells believed to be those of caliber 9mm pistol.

Benoman said the former barangay official succumbed to a head injury.

The stray bullet victim, who was hit in the shoulder, is now in stable condition.

Police is looking into possibility that her death could be related to the land conflict while she was still serving as barangay captain from 2007 to 2010. | GB
