The Felisa Sangguniang Barangay and residents have expressed satisfaction on the recent operational improvements at the Bacolod sanitary landfill, noting that the foul odor they previously complained about has significantly diminished.
Barangay Kagawad Melonie Biñas said Sept. 1 that garbage trucks transporting waste to the facility no longer emit the overwhelming stench that used to plague the community.
She added that leachate runoffs are no longer leaking into waterways, following corrective measures implemented by the city government.
“We hope their past shortcomings in the operation of the sanitary landfill will not happen again and they become serious about their commitment to the people of Felisa. We are not the sacrificial lamb of Bacolod, we are part of the 61 barangays of the city,” Biñas stressed.
She noted that developments came after the public hearing conducted by the Environmental Management Bureau-Negros Island Region Aug. 20 regarding the city’s application for an environmental compliance certificate for the landfill’s Cell No. 4.
Biñas, who was among the original complainants on the operation of cells 4 and 5 and potential water contamination, acknowledged the city and the private contractor’s course of action. | TMD
