Bacolod Mayor Greg Gasataya has urged the IPM Construction and Development Corp. Aug. 5 to fast-track the construction of the Integrated Recycling and Technological Hub at the sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa.

“We have urged the management of our sanitary landfill to fast-track the construction of the recycling hub,” Gasataya said in a statement after he visited the area yesterday morning.

He said the project, once completed, “will drastically improve our recycling efforts and reduce our residual waste.”

The recycling complex, worth P160 million, aims to improve solid waste management, create opportunities for recycling, and provide a space that promotes environmental awareness and education.

During a groundbreaking and capsule-laying ceremony March 12, which was also attended by Gasataya when he was still congressman, then Bacolod Environment and Natural Resources Office head Ma. Fe Trespuentes said the project includes the construction of a mechanized Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and site development works, worth P103 million; purchase of machineries and equipment needed to run the MRF, P47 million; and installation of electrical and lighting systems in the whole facility, P10 million.

There will be a conveyor belt sorting line, baling of recyclables, tree trimming and yard waste disposal for recycling, and windrow composting. The mechanized central MRF will also be able to process varied types of recyclable materials, including plastic waste, biodegradable waste, glass, paper, and metal, the city had said.

Project duration is two years and a half, and is part of the planned expansion of the city’s sanitary landfill. | CGC
