Faith in the storms of life

This past week, many of our brothers and sisters across the Philippines faced the harsh reality of storms: both literal and symbolic.

Typhoons brought strong winds and heavy rains. Schools suspended classes, workplaces closed, and many homes were flooded. These events are not just disruptions of routine; they are reminders that life is full of storms.

But storms are not just weather patterns. They can be health crises, financial difficulties, family problems, or spiritual dryness.

The Bible never promised a storm-free life, but it offers us a Savior who remains with us in the storm. Let us look at Mark 4:35-41, where Jesus calmed the storm. From this account, we draw encouragement to remain steadfast even when everything around us seems unstable.

First, call on Jesus in the middle of the storm.

Mark 4:38 says, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” The disciples panicked, even though Jesus was in the boat.

Sometimes, we think that if Jesus is with us, there should be no storms. But the truth is, storms come even when Jesus is in your life. What matters is who you call upon when fear hits.

They asked, “Don’t you care?” That’s a question many of us ask in our storms. But Jesus does care. He is just waiting for us to trust Him enough to call on Him.

When you face a personal crisis, be it sickness, loss, or rejection, do not keep your fears inside.

Call on Jesus. Pray honestly. Cry out. Jesus is not sleeping in neglect. Storms remind us of our limits, and God’s power.

Second, trust the power of Christ over the storm.

Mark 4:39 says, “He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’”

Jesus did not panic. He did not consult the disciples. He simply stood up and spoke. His Word had power over nature, and His Word still has power today.

What storms are we trying to control on our own when Jesus can simply say, “Peace, be still”?

This also speaks of spiritual storms: anxiety, temptation, depression. His Word brings peace to troubled hearts.

Trust that God has the power to calm your storm or calm you in the storm. Read Scripture daily and believe His promises. Let God’s Word be louder than your worries. | NWI
