St. Paul University-Dumaguete (SPUD), represented by its president, Sr. Mila Grace Silab, and Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo formally signed the deed of donation for 1,154 square meters of the school’s land to be used for the widening of Rovira Road in Barangay Bantayan.

Silab said the SPUD community decided to donate a significant portion of its land to help the local government address the problem of traffic congestion, and improve the flow of vehicles and pedestrians to enhance public safety.

With the realization of the lot donation May 16, Remollo said the city government will now be able to implement the seven-meter setback to be used in the widening of the Rovira Road to help decongest traffic, up to crossing Bantayan.

Present during the signing of the deed of donation were local superior Sr. Ellen Lorenzana, SPUD vice president for Finance Affairs; External Affairs Office head Erven Noay, Councilor Jose Baldado, City Tourism Office-designate and PIO Katherine Therese Aguilar, City Engineer Loyd Tenaja, and engineers Leonides Caro and Emmylou Cornelio of the City Planning and Development Office.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod earlier authorized Remollo to enter into and sign the deed of donation of a portion of real property inter-vivos (while alive) and all other documents pertinent to the donation, executed by the SPUD, and represented by Sr. Silab in favor of the City of Dumaguete.

In line with the agreement, the local government is committed to reconstruct a fence along the new property line to preserve the security of the SPUD compound, retrofit the school’s Guest House, and repair the portion of the Nursery Community Center affected by the relocation of the perimeter fence, the city said in a press release.

Remollo said he is optimistic that, with SPUD’s example, owners of other affected private lots will also agree to donate a portion of their properties so that the setback will be completed, from Rovira Road to corner north national highway, a major traffic chokepoint in the city, and so a traffic light system can be established for a more efficient flow of vehicles. ||
