The Department of Health-Negros Island Region (DOH-NIR) launched its flagship grassroots health program “PuroKalusugan” May 21, at Barangay Guadalupe covered court in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.

PuroKalusugan aims to bring essential healthcare services directly to the community level, especially in barangays and puroks, aligning with the department’s goal of accessible and inclusive health.

DOH-NIR representative and development management officer IV Rheale Jaudines said the program targets eight key health outcomes: immunization, nutrition, HIV and TB prevention, water sanitation and hygiene (WASH), road safety, hypertension and diabetes management, cancer prevention, and maternal care and services.

Jaudines added that DOH and City Health Office nurses, barangay health workers (BHWs), and barangay nutrition scholars (BNS) will regularly visit puroks and sitios in Brgy. Guadalupe and deliver these services.

She also noted that the program targets to serve 100 clients with free services until 2028, the city said in a press release May 22.

Aside from Guadalupe, other pilot barangays in San Carlos City where the program was launched include Quezon last April 29, and Codcod on May 6.

The launching was in coordination with the San Carlos City Health Office, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, and the Department of Education.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and the Land Transportation Office also assisted in providing various services. ||
