Amid the continuing restiveness of Kanlaon Volcano, the Department of Education (DepEd) in Negros Island Region has vowed to do its best to continue learning engagements with students displaced by the eruption.
Ramir Uytico, DepEd regional director for Negros Island Region, said he wants school officials in the affected areas to ensure that learners should continue their studies even in a not perfect learning environment.
Some students in areas affected by the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental may find themselves without classrooms when classes open on June 16 as some schools continue to serve as evacuation centers for displaced residents.
Uytico said that shifting or scheduling of classes in the morning and afternoon could be arranged in schools converted into evacuation centers.
Ian Arnold Arnaez, spokesperson of DepEd Negros Occidental Schools Division Office, said the enrollment in public schools and areas near Kanlaon Volcano, particularly in La Castellana, is ongoing.
“This will be the basis for the number of learning spaces they will need to open classes on June 16,” he said.
Uytico admitted that the Kanlaon eruption is a challenge for the DepEd on how to continue the studies of learners staying in the evacuation centers.
Each schools division in the affected communities and the DepEd regional office have formulated their respective contingency plans on how to address the challenges brought by the volcanic eruption, he added. | GB
