The Bacolod City Reclamation Area, framed by the distinctive bridgeways of SM City Bacolod, is taking on a festive look as preparations continue for the MassKara Festival 2026 street dance and arena dance competitions on Oct. 17 and 18.
With the city’s biggest dance weekend imminent, attention is turning to the colorful performances of school and barangay contingents, whose elaborate costumes, rhythmic music, and spirited choreography have become defining features of Bacolod’s annual celebration.
For the first time, the arena dance competitions will be staged at the reclamation area along Bishop Antonio Y. Fortich Avenue, between SM City Bacolod’s bridgeways. The new location provides a different setting for one of the festival’s most anticipated events, with the mall’s recognizable structures forming part of the surrounding cityscape.

The Bacolod city government and festival organizer Gugma Foundation are spearheading preparations for the competitions, which are expected to draw festival enthusiasts eager to witness the performances of participating schools and barangays.
Elementary and high school contingents will take center stage tomorrow, Oct. 17, followed by the barangay contingents on Sunday, Oct. 18.
The school competition will feature seven elementary school contingents: Education and Training Center School I, Montevista Elementary School, Vista Alegre-Granada Relocation Elementary School, Mandalagan Elementary School, Handumanan Elementary School, Sum-ag Elementary School, and Vista Alegre Elementary School.
Four high school contingents will also compete: Abkasa National High School, Progreso Village National High School, Bacolod City National High School, and Jovito H. Sayson National High School.
On Oct. 18, eight barangay contingents will bring their performances to the street dance and arena competitions: Barangays 6, 10, 13, Bata, Alangilan, Handumanan, Mandalagan, and Taculing. The participating communities will showcase their creativity through colorful costumes, choreography, and musical performances, continuing one of MassKara’s most anticipated traditions.
Together, the participating schools and barangays represent the creativity, dedication, and community spirit that continue to define Bacolod’s signature festival.
A celebration of Bacolod’s creativity
Beyond the spectacle of colorful masks and costumes, the MassKara street dance and arena competitions reflect the dedication and collective effort of the city’s communities.
For participating schools and barangays, the performances represent weeks and months of rehearsals, costume-making, choreography, and coordination. Each contingent brings its own interpretation of the festival’s joyful spirit, combining music, movement, and visual artistry in presentations that have made MassKara a signature attraction of the City of Smiles.
This year’s venue places the performances beside one of Bacolod’s familiar gathering places, with SM City Bacolod’s bridgeways creating a recognizable backdrop for the competition.
The location also puts festivalgoers within easy reach of dining, shopping, and leisure destinations, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy more of the city’s offerings throughout the weekend. ||
