Classes in public and private schools in Negros Oriental were suspended Monday, March 31, due to severe weather conditions and significant flooding.

The suspension was stated in Executive Order No. 2 issued by Gov. Manuel Sagarbarria, after the state weather bureau PAGASA issued Heavy Rainfall Warning No. 6, placing portions of Negros Oriental under yellow warning level.

“It is imperative to implement a localized cancellation or suspension of in-person classes at all levels as precautionary measure to mitigate the potential risk associated with the inclement weather,” Sagarbarria said in the directive.

The local government units of Siaton, Dauin and Zamboanguita, among others, have declared suspension of classes in their respective territorial jurisdictions.

PAGASA reported that several areas in the country will experience rains caused by three weather systems.

The low pressure area (LPA) located 80 kilometers west-northwest of Pag-asa Island, Kalayaan, Palawan will bring scattered rains and thunderstorms over Palawan.

As of 2 a.m., PAGASA said the LPA is unlikely to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Eastern Visayas, Bicol Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, Quezon, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte will also experience scattered rains and thunderstorms due to easterlies.

Moderate to heavy rains in the abovementioned areas could result in flash floods or landslides, according to PAGASA.

Batanes will experience light rains due to the northeasterly wind flow.

Isolated rain showers or thunderstorms caused by the easterlies will prevail over the rest of the archipelago.

Moderate to strong winds and moderate to rough coastal waters are forecast in Northern Luzon.

PAGASA said winds will be light to moderate with slight to moderate seas in other areas. | GB with PNA reports
