The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod has passed on first reading a proposed ordinance that seeks to grant financial incentives to Bacolodnon college students graduating with Latin honors.

Proponent Councilor Jason Isidro Villarosa said the measure proposes a cash incentive of P10,000 for a summa cum laude graduate.

Magna cum laude graduates will receive P5,000 each, while those with cum laude honors will be entitled to P3,000 in cash.

“This will be a boost to our students and, hopefully, will be an inspiration for them to do well in their studies,” Villarosa said.

The proposed ordinance requires the recipient to be a registered voter of Bacolod and must be of good moral character, with no derogatory record, and graduated with Latin honors from any state college or university in the highly-urbanized city.

Villarosa clarified that the monetary reward is distinct from the city’s existing Pasidungog Ordinance, which honors outstanding students and student-athletes. | TMD
