The provincial government of Negros Occidental, through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), has extended support to the Carmelite Monastery in Brgy. Mandalagan, Bacolod City in launching a small-scale aquaculture project.
Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, together with OPA head Dina Genzola and BFAR aquaculturist Froilan de la Cruz, led the ceremonial stocking of 5,000 catfish and 2,000 tilapia fry into the monastery’s newly-established fishpond July 18.

The fry will be cultured for four to five months, the Capitol said in a press release.
The fishpond, which features five compartments for separate catfish and tilapia production, forms part of the monastery’s livelihood initiatives.
It complements the existing rice production area within the compound, supporting the community’s goal of self-sufficiency.
OPA will also assist the monastery in improving rice production through crop protection and the provision of relevant agricultural technologies. ||
